Therapy Method and Background
Dr. Kanther's private psychotherapy practice gives her the opportunity to work in true collaboration with her patients and to apply the profound, effective, and research validated theories of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) under which numerous brilliant treatments evolved. As a clinical health psychologist, Dr. Kanther understands the interplay among psychological, sociocultural, and physical health and works with you and medical professionals to optimize quality of life. If the therapy experience is new to you, Dr. Kanther is open and transparent with her approach, so you will understand what is happening. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is relatable and logical, while also capturing those mind-bending "wow" moments as connections are made. It is intended to be a time limited model that addresses the problems of today as expressed through behavior, relationship patterns, thoughts, and feelings with an appreciation for and understanding of the past and an emphasis on moving forward. Dr. Kanther's hope is for her patients to internalize the CBT process such that they can apply the tools and insights beyond the therapy room, feel empowered, transformed, and become their own therapist.
Dr. Kanther served on medical staff at UCSF-SFGH Department of Psychiatry where she provided evidence-based psychotherapy and behavioral medicine services in San Francisco General Hospital's primary care clinics. She collaborated with medical providers to enhance the psychological well-being and self-care habits of medical patients, taught and supervised psychology and medical interns, fellows, and residents, and enhanced access to mental health care for San Francisco's most marginalized and diverse residents.
Dr. Kanther helped develop the pain psychology program at Bay Area Pain and Wellness Center (formerly Northern California Pain Care) as their Director of Psychology, and consulted with Functional Restoration and pain programs in the Bay Area where she promoted the management of chronic pain, non-dependence on opiates, and reclamation of quality of life. In addition, Dr. Kanther conducted psychological evaluations for bariatric surgery candidates in collaboration with Healthy Steps Therapeutic Lifestyle and Bariatric Surgery Center in Northern California to help maximize physical and psychological health and preparedness for surgery.
She served as a clinical advisor and clinician for Ginger.io, a San Francisco based health technology company and is currently the clinical consultant for JASP (Judicial Assistance Services Program) facilitating emotional support and peer counselor mental health trainings for the judges of Washington State. She stays active and fresh providing mentorship, delivering seminars and talks, and participating in professional consultation. Recent talk topics include anger, stress and adaptation within a pandemic and uncertainty, and art and music in psychotherapy. She also volunteers at the Seattle Humane Society teaching dogs of all ages new tricks, and learning some of her own.
