 Therapy Approach and Background

Dr. Kanther's private practice gives her the opportunity to work in true collaboration with her patients, not governed by treatment policies or insurance limitations, and to apply the profound, effective, and research validated theories of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT).  As a trained health psychologist, Dr. Kanther understands the interplay among psychological, sociocultural, and physical health.  If the therapy experience is new to you, Dr. Kanther is open and transparent with her approach, so you will understand what is happening.  Cognitive Behavior Therapy is intended to be a time limited model that addresses the problems of today as expressed through behavior, relationship patterns, thoughts, and feelings with an appreciation for and understanding of the past and an emphasis on moving forward.  Dr. Kanther's hope is for her patients to internalize the CBT process such that they can apply the tools and insights beyond the therapy room, feel empowered, transformed, and become their own therapist.

Dr. Kanther served on medical staff at UCSF-SFGH Department of Psychiatry where she provided psychotherapy and behavioral medicine services in San Francisco General Hospital's primary care clinics.  She collaborated with medical providers to enhance the psychological well-being and self-care habits of medical patients, taught and supervised psychology and medical interns, fellows, and residents, and enhanced access to mental health care for San Francisco's most marginalized and diverse residents.

Dr. Kanther recently joined the Northern California Pain Care Functional Restoration Program in Marin County as their primary pain psychologist.  There, she works with the team to promote the management of chronic pain and reclamation of their patients' lives through validating cognitive behavior therapy and group support, independent of opiate medication.   She also consults for the Northern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS), collaborating with professionals, advocates, and individuals in support of the NMSS mission.
